Dear students

If you  haven't already done so, please send me the final version of your poster as soon as possible so I can get them printed - Sunday is a holiday, and my assistant who has super tech capabilities will not be here on Thursday to help me with any technical glitches, so the sooner they get to me, the better. We printed one today to make sure it comes out well, and it looks really good.

Thanks.

Linda

Dear students

I have found a new website which gives some very useful and simple tips regarding the layout of academic posters. If you are not sure when looking at your poster if it 'fits the bill', take a look here. This site relates to fonts, contrasts, average percentage of text, images and space to include, and other suggestions too.

We will have time tomorrow to complete and review them together.

Bye for now

Linda

This week, in class, we discussed the issue of biodiversity loss with reference to Professor Harper's lecture and the materials in section 2 of the Biodiversity Unit.

In groups, you reviewed the discussion questions while starting to compile a PowerPoint presentation which your group will present in the second half of the session next week. You have shared the outline of your PowerPoint in Google slides - each group member is responsible for one slide and should complete it before next week. On Monday, you will be able to check that you are happy with the presentation and also to practice giving the presentation together.

For a good presentation, you need a strong opening and a strong ending where you sum up  your main points and thank your audience for their attention. When you complete your section, hand over to the next person using their name (e.g. Apple will continue). Remember that your overall aim is to convince your audience of the importance of this issue but also to leave them with some hope for the future.

Following your agreement to the change in the syllabus, the written task, the mission statement, will now be worth 20% of the overall grade for the course and a participation grade of 10% will be included. The language element of the written task's scoring system will be transferred to the content section and the grades will be reviewed.

Have a great week, enjoy the cool weather and see you on Monday.

This week we began investigating the topic of biodiversity. In class we listened to the first part of Professor Harper's lecture and in groups you discussed ecosystem services and the uses and purposes of a variety of green spaces. You also began to explore some of the top ecosystem hotspots around the world. We will look at these in more depth.

In preparation for the next meeting, please watch the next part of the lecture in Biodiversity 2, from minute 7 to 17.35 minutes. Please also read the short articles in the links below the video from the WWF, the Guardian and Nature.com

Please also make sure to share your posters with me so that I can give you some feedback and pointers for completing them. We will review them in class in 2 weeks' time so that you can all comment on each other's posters before we prepare for the actual poster session.

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.
